September 2023 Update

7th October 2023 by Min Yee

Dear Friends of PKH,

We hope this message finds you well. PKH is delighted to share some work which we have accomplished over the past couple of months. Thank you to those who made this possible despite the various challenges faced.

PKH Sports Day

On 8 July, teams from the three centres and Seeds of Hope Childcare competed in friendly soccer matches. PKH Chbarmon (in blue) was the winning team.

PKHES students and 2021-22 PKH graduates also came to participate. The graduates blessed current students with snacks and dinner of fried chicken, sweet potato fries and cola.  Thank God for their love and generosity. Also, for the provision of jerseys for the teams and prizes.

PKH Tour (24 – 27 August)

58 supporters joined the tour and interacted with PKH alumni and their families at the alumni dinner on 24 August. 140 PKH graduates (2006 – 2022) attended the function. It was an evening of remembering and celebrating God’s blessings over the work of PKH in Cambodia and the lives of those who have passed through PKH centres.

The tour visited the three centres on 25 August. In PKH Chbarmon, the visitors were welcomed by the Year 1 English students and watched performances by PKHES. PKH Aoral students were happy to meet the visitors. More than 200 parents came to PKH Trang. They enjoyed watching their children perform for the visitors.

Updates at PKH Centres

PKH Cbharmorn

The fifteen Hospitality students have completed their course. Despite it being the off-peak season, thank God that some have been employed and others accepted for short-term internships.

The Year 1 students finished Term 2 and went home for the term break on 26 August. Teacher Rachel has completed her contract as a temporary English teacher for the Year 1 students.  Thank God for His provision of a teacher for the first two terms for the English department.

PKH English School

English classes are on-going.

2008 PKH graduate Thy Sothea visited the centre again with his staff from his company, Passion Group, on 1 July.  They brought roast duck noodles/rice for all the students and staff for lunch. Thy Sothea shared with the students about his life and experiences after leaving PKH in 2008.

PKH Aoral

In July, the students learnt how to build a chair in carpentry lessons. They also had practical lessons in masonry and painting by participating in improvement works at PKH Trang Centre.

In August, the students completed the electrical work course.

PKH Trang

In July, a survey of the community was conducted, listing every child by name according to their “family book” (the equivalent of the birth certificate).

Parents from 108 households came to register their children who are eligible for before-and-after school care at the centre.  They also provided an update on the whereabouts of their older children.

The current student enrolment is 201 children (aged 5 – 12 years). They come from a total of 7 villages, and are mainly from Chom Bok and Trang Villages.

More than 150 ex-students are young working adults and a number are married with children. Out of the 150, 20% are working in the hotel industry after completing training in ISC or hospitality. Other occupations include a chef, teachers, maintenance staff and bank officers.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to expanding our work here in Cambodia. We invite you to stay connected with us through our various communication channels, including our website and social media platforms, to stay updated on our upcoming projects and events.

To God be the glory.

Yours sincerely,

PKHCambodia

May 2023 Update

28th May 2023 by Min Yee

Hello, hello, hello! It’s time for another exciting update from PKH! We’ve got a lot to say to you, so grab a coffee and let’s dive into all that has happened at PKH.

Chbarmorn

On 8th April, students from Chbarmorn Centre, ISC students from Aoral Centre and PKHES students gathered together to celebrate the Khmer New Year. It was a special day of fun and games organised by the Living Streams pastors.

Due to a recent downpour, a palm tree fell through the kitchen roof at the Chbarmorn Centre. Thankfully, no one was hurt. We are now in the midst of restoring the roof and the kitchen.

Aoral

Students at Aoral were at work! Thanks to online lessons delivered by our fellow volunteers (Shaun, Julia, Gavin and Tuck Hway)!

Trang

Recently, we had additional students from other neighbourhoods who attended the morning classes at Trang Centre. Despite a six week public holiday declared by the Cambodian government in view of the SEA Games held between 5-17 May 2023, students were still keen to learn and turned up for classes!

Recent heavy downpours have resulted in quite some flooding in the dining area. So, we are now in the midst of erecting a wall at the dining area with stones which were collected from the nearby mountain.

PKH English School

Students are due to take their English end term test on the 17 and 18 May. We hope the students will be able to do well for the test and following that, enjoy the term break which begins on the 20 May.

2022 December Update

6th January 2023 by Min Yee

Dear Friends,

Warmest greetings and blessed 2023!

Thanksgiving for 2022
Another year has gone by, and we thank God that PKH was able to reopen in March 2022, when Covid-19 restrictions were eased in Cambodia.
PKH vocational students returned to the Centres to continue their studies that was halted due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Through the hard work of both students and teachers, 44 students (21 from Industrial Skills Course, 13 from Hospitality and 10 from Housekeeping) completed their training by November, and successfully passed their interviews to secure jobs in Phnom Penh.

Team Visit in November
In November, PKH had the opportunity to welcome a team of 9 (8 adults and 1 child) from St Andrew’s Cathedral, who organised various activities, games and even a campfire night. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the students did not experience any team visits since 2020, and were unfamiliar with the games that the SAC team introduced, but quickly picked up the basics and had such fun with the team.

Students had the option to learn how to play the ukulele, sing Christmas Carols and flag dancing. Many former students also returned to join the campfire night, and shared their testimonies with the current students.

The SAC team also organised a Christmas party in Trang, and ministered to two families who had lost their young boys in two separate incidents.

PKH Christmas Celebrations
The Centres held Christmas celebrations in December, before the students left for their job placements in Phnom Penh hotels. Former graduates joined the celebrations and amongst themselves, arranged a collection for PKH as a love gift. The staff and students were greatly encouraged by their testimonies and their generosity.

Looking forward to 2023
Renovation at Chbarmon Centre, to convert former ISC workshops into new classrooms, have commenced and construction is expected to be completed in time for the new academic year. The new classrooms will be suitable for the PKH English School to conduct their lessons, as well as additional vocational modules that may be introduced in time to come.

We look forward to the new academic year starting on 27 February, where we expect all the Centres to return close to pre-Covid19 enrolment. PKH Centres are currently preparing to conduct Interviews for potential candidates seeking to enrol in the vocational courses. The Interviews will be held from 9 to 13 January, and we have received over 100 application forms thus far. Do keep the trainers and staff in prayer as they conduct the Interviews, and for safe travels for the candidates as they journey to PKH from all over Cambodia.

As we enter into 2023 and reflect on the year that has passed, we are thankful to each of our partners and supporters who have been a constant encouragement, and for your continued support and prayers. It is much appreciated, and we look forward to welcoming teams and visitors back to PKH in the coming year, including the PKH Alumni Tour to Cambodia. More information on the tour will be shared in 2023.

In the meantime, please enjoy these photo updates from Cambodia.

From all of us at Project Khmer H.O.P.E., here’s wishing you a very Happy New Year!
May the Lord bless you, always.

Blessings,
Adeline Hee
